Tamim announces retirement from international cricket, again
Bangladesh's star opener Tamim Iqbal announced his retirement from international cricket through a post from his official Facebook page today.
"I have been distant from international cricket for a while, and that distance will remain. The chapter of my international cricket has ended," read Tamim's post.
The left-handed opener, who last featured for Bangladesh in an ODI against New Zealand in September, 2023, was being considered for the Tigers' squad for the upcoming Champions Trophy, to be played in a hybrid model in Pakistan and the UAE from February 19.
On Wednesday, Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) chief selector Gazi Ashraf Hossain Lipu had a meeting with Tamim regarding the matter in Sylhet, where the cricketer is leading Fortune Barishal in the ongoing Bangladesh Premier League. Tamim had relayed to the board that he would make his mind up about his participation in the Champions Trophy after having a discussion with his family, favourite coach and his well-wishers.
Tamim had earlier retired from T20Is in July, 2022, and about a year later, on July 6, 2023, he also bid adieu to international cricket for the first time. However, he had overturned his decision to retire from international cricket just a day later at the request of then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who was ousted from her regime on August 5 last year following a mass movement.
