Bangladesh did not take heavy damage as rain forced the first day of the second Test against India in Kanpur to be cut short.

Only 35 overs were played as the Tigers reached 107 for the loss of three, with Mominul Haque and Mushfiqur Rahim unbeaten on 40 and six, respectively.

The visitors, who were asked to bat first, lost both their openers - Zakir Hasan (0) and Shadman Islam (24) - to India pacer Akash Deep before Lunch.

Ravichandran Ashwin struck in the post-Lunch session to removed Bangladesh skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto (31).

Only nine overs were bowled in that session as bad light interrupted play before heavy rain forced proceedings to be called off for the day.

According to The Daily Star's correspondent in Kanpur, the bad light and overcast conditions were soon followed by heavy rain, making the resumption of play unlikely.

Ashwin strikes to remove Shanto

India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin struck to end Bangladesh skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto's resistance in the second session on Day 1 of the second Test in Kanpur today.

Shanto, who put away six fours for his 31, was trapped lbw by a delivery that held its line and came back to hit Shanto's pads from around the wicket.

This reduced the Tigers to three down for 80 after 29 overs.

Shanto, Mominul steer Tigers after Deep trouble

Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto and former skipper Mominul Haque have ensured the Tigers head into the Lunch interval unscathed after India quick Akash Deep removed both openers in quick succession during the opening session of the series-deciding second Test in Kanpur today.

The visitors are 74-2, having negotiated 26 overs under overcast conditions, with Shanto and Mominul batting on 28 and 17, respectively. The duo combined to strike nine boundaries during their 45-run stand off 83 balls.

Openers Zakir, Shadman fall to Deep after cautious start

Bangladesh opener Zakir Hasan departed without scoring after a 24-ball stay in the middle before his partner Shadman Islam followed suit as the Tigers suffer early setback after sent into bat in the second and final Test in Kanpur today.

The tourists are 37-2 after 13 overs, after seamer Akash Deep drew first blood, helped by a brilliant low catch Yashasvi Jaiswal at slip.

With the dismissal, Zakir occupies fourth position on the list of Bangladesh batters who have faced the most deliveries before getting out for naught. Among top-order batters batting in positions 1-3, he tops the list, surpassing Imrul Kayes' 18-ball duck against Zimbabwe in 2018.

The right-arm quick then removed Shadman for 24, trapping the southpaw in front -- the lbw decision was given in India's favour following a review.

Tigers asked to bat in Shakib's final away Test

India captain Rohit Sharma has won the toss and asked Bangladesh to bat first in the second and final Test at Kanpur's Green Park Stadium today.

The visitors have introduced two changes in their lineup, as pacer Khaled Ahmed and spinner Taijul Islam replace Nahid Rana and Taskin Ahmed. The home side, however, have chosen to field an unchanged eleven and "will be looking to make early inroads", informed Rohit.

Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto said he got the desired outcome at the toss despite losing it. "I would have batted first," he said.

The Tigers are looking to end the series at 1-1 after their opening loss and the match will be former Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan's last outing in the format abroad.

Wet outfield delays toss in Kanpur

The start of the series-deciding second Test between Bangladesh and hosts India at the Green Park Stadium has been delayed by at least 30 minutes today, due to wet outfield caused by forecasted overnight rain in Kanpur.

The next inspection is due at 10pm, Bangladesh time, but it is likely that the delay could stretch further and that bad weather might continue to play spoilsport over the next few days.

Update: Upon inspecting the ground conditions, the match officials have decided that the toss will be held at 10:30am (Bangladesh time) before the match gets underway at 11am.
