Women’s BPL to increase standard of cricket: Fahim
Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) director Nazmul Abedeen Fahim said that the Women's Bangladesh Premier League will help to improve women's cricket in the country.
"The board has been thinking for a while about a way to take women's cricket forward. Keeping that in mind, we were thinking about the possibility of having a BPL for the women. We have decided today that we will do it," Fahim told reporters at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur on Friday.
"We will arrange it right after the conclusion of this BPL, with the participation of three teams and will wrap it up within eight-nine days. We have already spoken to a few franchises and they have shown interest.
"It will be a one-off tournament and we want to see the effect it brings to women's cricket. We are hoping that it can take women's cricket to another level."
Three teams, each with 15 local players, will fight it out for the crown. Each team will be able to field one overseas player into their eleven.
A total of seven matches, all to take place in Mirpur, including the final, will decide who wins the tournament.
When asked about why the board went with having just three teams participate in the tournament, Fahim pointed at maximising the quality of cricket.
"I don't think we can carry out a quality tournament by including quality players if we have more than three teams. We won't have enough quality players for a standard tournament if we have more than three teams. We thought of arranging the tournament with four teams but those issues became obstacles. We ultimately want to increase the standard of the cricket."
