Bangladesh 289 all out

Bangladesh scored 289 before being bowled out in what was the final over of the opening day of the second Test at the Hagley Oval today.

Tim Southee took five wickets and the experienced pace blower also removed Kamrul Islam, who kept the home side at bay with a resolute two of 63 balls before being trapped in front of the wicket in the 85th over of the day.

Another pace bowler Rubel Hossain, who scored an enterprising 16, got few blows in the body including a painful one in the right elbow however was successful to deprive Trent Boult of what could have been his fifth wicket.

The highlight of Bangladesh’s first innings was a fine 86 by opener Soumya Sarkar and an equally important 59 from Shakib Al Hasan. They added 127 runs for the third wicket after skipper Tamim Iqbal and an out of sort Mahmudullah Riyad departed inside the first hour after being asked to bat on a wicket that offered considerable seam movement.

Debutant wicket-keeper Nurul Hasan was the other notable contributor to t he total with a chancy 47.  

Leading the team for the first time in a Test match, Tamim was caught down the leg side after having a bit of glove off an attempted pull against Tim Southee. Tamim was out for five and Bangladesh lost their first wicket for only seven runs on the board. Mahmudullah came after the departure of Tamim. The right-hander, who has been starving for runs, missed more deliveries than he had negotiated before Trent Boult ended his misery for an unconvincing 19. Mahmudullah went for the drive but could manage only an inside edge to wicketkeeper BJ Watling, leaving Bangladesh at 2-38 inside the first hour of the play.

Bangladesh have made four changes in the team from the first Test in Wellington, which they lost by seven wickets despite taking a crucial first-inning lead.

Soumya came in for injured opener Imrul Kayes; wicketkeeper Nurul Hasan made his Test debut coming in as a replacement for injured Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim; young batsman Nazmul Hasan came in place of injured one-down batsman Mominul Haque; pace bowler Rubel Hossain marked his Test return in place of Subashis Roy, who made his Test debut in Wellington.
