There was a hattrick each in the two Indian Premier League matches played on Friday, one achieved in a losing cause by West Indies and Royal Challengers Bangalore leg-spinner Samuel Badree and the other that won the match by Australian and Gujarat Lions pacer Andrew Tye.

The 36-year-old Badree, opening the bowling in his team's defence of 142 in Banglalore, bowling his second over, tossed the ball up at Mumbai Indians opener Parthiv Patel but the left-handed batsman got his timing all wrong as he sent it straight towards Chris Gayle at short extra cover.

Mitchell McClenaghan was the next to go as the New Zealand international misjudged a low full toss from Badree to give Mandeep Singh, at long on, a simple catch. Badree completed his hat-trick with a delightful googly which shattered Mumbai captain Rohit Sharma's stumps.

Badree, who also claimed the wicket of Nitish Rana later in the innings to finish with figures of four for nine in his four overs, is the 12th man in IPL history to take a hat-trick. However, fellow West Indian Kieron Pollard hit a 47-ball 70 to help Mumbai recover to a win by four wickets with seven balls remaining.

In the evening match in Rajkot, Tye took the wickets of Rising Pune Supergiants batsmen Rahul Tripathi and Ben Stokes in his first two spells before coming back to bowl the last over and had Ankit Sharma and Manoj Tiwary caught off slower balls before completing the hattrick by bowling Shardul Thakur with a yorker.

Unlike the first match, however, the hattrick was rewarded with a win as Gujarat openers Brendon McCullum and Dwayne Smith put on 94 for the first wicket before a pair of 30s from skipper Suresh Raina (35 off 22) and Aaron Finch (33 off 19) ensured that Gujarat reached the 172-run target in just 18 overs with seven wickets in hand.
