Tahsin secures final IM norm in Hungary

FM Tahsin Tajwar Zia earned the third and final norm for turning an International Master after beating Hungarian Grandmaster Gergely Aczel in the 10th and final round of Farago Ivan Memorial GM Chess tournament in Hungary on Sunday.
The 19-year-old, however, will have to wait to get the IM title till taking his rating to 2400, which currently is 2354.
Tahsin, son of late GM Ziaur Rahman, had secured his first and second IM norms from Asian Zonal Chess Championships in 2023 in Dhaka and in 2025 in Sri Lanka.
The Bangladeshi chess player needed six points to secure his final IM norm in the double-round Farago Ivan Memorial GM tournament where three GMs from Hungary and two Indian players including an IM alongside Tahsin took part. Out of 10 matches, Tahsin only lost one match, which came against India's Uppala Adarsh
He, however, beat all three GMs from Hungary once and drew against them once to achieve the title.
Bangladesh Cricket Board and Bergner Paints Bangladesh Limited supported the young chess player financially in realising Tahsin's dream.
