While Bangladesh still remains the largest nation in terms of population to have never earned an Olympic medal, the country has at last got rid of another sorry statistic this time. In the previous eight appearances, no Bangladeshi participant earned their rights through qualification, rather they had to depend on wild cards provided by the OIC and world sports federations which is done to ensure participation of all member nations.
However, this time Siddikur Rahman, the renowned golfer, has ended that sorry sequence and earned the bragging rights to represent the nation through qualification for the men's golf event. Hence he has been chosen, fittingly, to carry the Bangladesh flag in the marchpast of the opening ceremony, which will be held at the famous Maracana Stadium in Rio on August 5.
The six other participants from Bangladesh are – sprinters Mezbah Ahmed and Shirin Akter, archer Syamoli Roy, shooter Abdullahel Baki, and swimmers Mahfizur Rahman Sagar and Sonia Akter Tuma. Sagar, who carried the national flag in the London Olympics, is the only member of the team to have prior experience of Olympics participation.
