Is Gayle a burden for Barishal?

Known for his big-hitting ability over the years, West Indies' star batter Chris Gayle hasn't been able to live up to his expectations for Fortune Barishal in the ongoing Bangabandhu Bangladesh Premier League.

The self-proclaimed 'Universe Boss' even batted at number five in the first two games before eventually returning to his usual opening position. With top score of 45, Gayle managed a total of 117 runs in five games, which certainly does not justify his ability and has become the biggest concerns for the Barishal team management.

When asked whether an underperforming Gayle becomes a burden for the side, Barishal's batting consultant Nazmul Abedeen Fahim said, "To be honest yes it can happen. If he (Gayle) does not score runs then there is very little to get from him as we even had to hide him while fielding."

With four wins in seven games, Barishal will take on table-toppers Comilla Victorians to resume the Sylhet leg of the BPL tomorrow. According to Fahim, the team management has kept faith in Gayle and said that the cricketer from Jamaica has the ability to turn things around in no time.

"We all know that he still has the ability to change the complexion of a game in five overs. That's why we are keeping faith and confidence in him and trying to give him the confidence so that he can keep his focus and don't have to think about his place in the team. We are hoping as time goes by, he will gradually adjust and play well," he said.
