Moeen keen on learning Sylheti
England all-rounder Moeen Ali is playing the Bangladesh Premier League for Comilla Victorians and while he is of Pakistani and English descent, the cricketer opined that Bangladesh is just as much a home for him.
Moeen's wife Firoza Hossain is Sylhet-born and courtesy of that, Moeen feels a connection to the northeastern city. Moeen first visited Bangladesh with England's age-level team in 2005. He also played the Dhaka Premier League in 2010-2011 with Mohammedan. Amidst visits with the national team, Moeen also had a stint in the BPL in 2013. However, he had never come to Sylhet before.
On Sunday, following practice, the English all-rounder talked about his family visiting Sylhet.
"My wife is here. Her sisters, brother in law, they are all in Dhaka, coming to Sylhet in two days' time," Moeen told reporters in Sylhet.
Born in England to parents from Pakistan, Moeen feels just as much at home in Bangladesh. Although the bio-bubble meant that the lend-handed batter cannot roam around with family.
"Bangladesh is home; Pakistan is home; England is home. I see them as all the same to be honest. All my in-laws are here. Respect to them, it's my first time Syhlet. They always used to tell me, 'let's go to Syhlet' but somehow, I couldn't manage the time. It's nice to be here now. It's a shame we can't go out but I am very happy to be here," he said.
Moeen was, however, keen on learning more Sylheti words.
"I know a few Sylheti words and that's about it. I wish I learned more actually. I would try and learn more now that I am here. Because the guys at the hotel are speaking Sylheti to me," the 34-year-old cricketer said.
