BPL 2025

BPL’s own time out drama

The Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) almost witnessed its first ever time out incident today when Khulna Tigers captain Mehedi Hasan Miraz appealed for the dismissal against Chittagong Kings' batter Tom O'Connell but later retracted the appeal at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur.

The incident happened in the seventh over of the second innings, when Chittagong were in disarray in chase of Khulna's 203 for four.

Chittagong lost their fifth wicket in the first ball of the seventh over when Haider Ali got trapped lbw by Mohammad Nawaz for a duck.

O'Connell took more than two minutes to take strike following Haider's dismissal, breaching Law 40.1 of the game which states that an incoming batter must enter the field and be ready to face a delivery within two minutes.

Khulna skipper Miraz and his teammates went up to the umpire and appealed for the time out dismissal and on-field umpires Raveendra Wimalasiri and Tanvir Ahmed had to signal out, as the perplexed Aussie batter looked on.

But as Tom was walking back to the dugout, Miraz showed sportsmanship and retracted his appeal and the umpires called the batter back.

But it ended up being inconsequential as Tom did not trouble the scorers, perishing in the first ball he faced, and holed out at mid-on off Nawaz for a golden duck.

In the 2023 ODI World Cup, Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan created a huge uproar when he enforced the time out rule to dismiss Sri Lanka's Angelo Mathews – making him the first batter in international cricket to get 'timed out'.
