Tanzid does it ‘naturally’
Dhaka Capitals opener Tanzid Tamim laced his match-winning 54-ball 90 not out against Chittagong Kings in Chattogram yesterday with just four boundaries and a total of seven maximums -- becoming the Bangladeshi batter with the most sixes in a single edition of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) with 29 in 10 matches so far.
There was an effortlessness to his six-hitting prowess and the batter also acknowledged it in the post-match presser.
"There's no secret to it [six hitting]. I play like this naturally," he said. "During practice, I work on my strengths and try to improve on the mistakes I make in games. So, there's no mystery -- I just play my natural game.
"I was trying to give myself some time. The ball was coming a bit late. But I thought if I gave myself time, I'd be able to score runs. So I followed that plan, took my time, played good deliveries, and punished the bad ones."
The explosive knock also saw him to the top of the scoring charts with 420 runs.
Tanzid matched Tawhid Hridoy's haul of 24 sixes, the previous highest for a Bangladeshi batter in a single BPL, with a six off a Shoriful Islam delivery in the fourth over. He would pull the left-arm pacer with ease to go past Hridoy on the very next delivery.
Only 'Universe Boss' Chris Gayle has more sixes in a single BPL. In 2017, the explosive Caribbean batter hit 47 sixes in 11 innings for Rangpur Riders.
Breaking or matching Gayle's record, however, is not on Tanzid's mind. His team are still desperately fighting to keep their head above water, having picked up their third win in 10 matches.
"I've never thought about it like that [breaking the record for most sixes]. We still have two more matches ahead, and the plan is to finish those matches well. That's what we're all focusing on. If it happens (breaking the record), it'll happen. But I'll try to stick to my usual game plan," he said.
