The curious case of Rajshahi’s BPL pick Miguel Cummins
Miguel Cummins. The name might ring a bell to the diehard fans of West Indies cricket, but for the most casual T20 aficionados who follow franchise cricket for the fun and the big names, the only reason Miguel may invoke any interest is his surname – Cummins, which he shares with the current Australia all-format captain.
Miguel is in discussion because he has been flown in by Durbar Rajshahi to steady their rocking boat in the ongoing Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). But delving into this Cummins' credentials as a cricketer may not give too much confidence to the fans of Rajshahi, who are languishing just above the bottom-placed Dhaka Capitals with four points from six matches.
The 34-year-old pacer has represented West Indies 14 Tests and 11 ODIs, with below-par return while he has never been picked for a T20I. Chances are that he may never get a call because the last time he played in West Indies colours was in a Test match back in 2019. Later that year, Miguel signed a Colpak deal for three years, ruling him out of West Indies cricket for the time being.
There in the English County Championship, Miguel played the last of his handful of T20 matches, back in September 2020. According to the stats of ESPNCricinfo, the right-arm pacer last played a competitive cricket match of any sort during the West Indies 4-day Championship in June 2022, for Barbados against Windward Islands.
It seems that Rajshahi, one of three new franchises in BPL this year, may have found something special about this middle-aged West Indian pacer which seems to have evaded most other cricket teams around the world.
Miguel, however, is not unique in this case. BPL, the second-oldest ICC-approved franchise T20 league, has in recent years become a haven for cricketers who have long been past their primes or for those who never really made the top grade.
But BPL scouts had, in the past, unearthed some raw talents who later went on to dominate T20 cricket around the world, with Jofra Archer, Dawid Malan and Mujeebur Rehman some cases in point. You never know, this year's BPL might prove to be the magic potion that Miguel needs to revitalise his cricketing career, which seemed to have hit a dead end.
