Afghanistan favourites against Pakistan on spinning wicket, says Ramiz Raja
Former Pakistan captain Ramiz Raja predicts more misery for his team in the ongoing ICC ODI World Cup as he feels the Babar Azam-led side will start slightly behind Afghanistan in their next match in the tournament if they play in a spin friendly wicket in Chennai.
After beginning their tournament with consecutive wins against the Netherlands and Sri Lanka, Pakistan have suffered two crushing defeats on the trot against India and Australia.
They will be hoping to put their campaign back on track in their next match, where they will next take on Afghanistan on October 23 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
However, Raja feels that if the pitch in Chennai assists spinners, the Afghans will start as slight favourites against Pakistan.
"It will be difficult for Pakistan to make a turnaround. Anything can happen in Chennai in their next match, which is against Afghanistan. Keeping in mind the performance of Pakistan batters against spin, anything can happen here. If it's a spinning wicket, I think Afghanistan will be slightly ahead as favourites," Raja said on his Youtube channel.
Raja also criticised Pakistan's sloppy fielding against Australia. Usama Mir dropped Australian opener David Warner very early in his innings and his team paid dearly for the mistake as the Southpaw then went onto score a blistering 163 off 124 balls, which powered the Aussies to 367-9.
Pakistan lost the match by 62 runs.
"It is rare in cricket that if a catch is dropped, a player suffers punishment throughout the match. Usama Mir dropped a simple catch. Warner then had 10 runs and he went on to score 163 runs. I have never seen a team get such a huge penalty for dropping a catch.
"From there, the shape of the match changed. If Shaheen (Afridi) could have sent back Warner, Australia could have been put under pressure. Pakistan's fielding was very bad," Raja said.
