England win will bring smiles to earthquake-hit Afghans, says Rashid
Afghanistan's star leg-spinner Rashid Khan on Sunday hoped that his team's stunning victory over defending champions England in the ICC ODI World Cup will bring momentary relief for the people of Afghanistan, who are reeling from devastating earthquakes.
Afghanistan pulled off the first upset in the ongoing edition of the World Cup, defeating England by 69 runs at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.
After the momentous victory, Rashid, who claimed three wickets in their successful defense, hoped that the outcome will bring some smiles back home, who have been hit with three earthquakes just this month.
"Cricket is something that brings joy to the people back home. Winning the game against England is big for us. Recently, we had an earthquake back home. Over 3,000 people lost their lives, many houses were destroyed, so this win will put a little bit of smile on their faces and maybe, they can little bit forget those days," Rashid told the broadcasters after the match.
This was Afghanistan's first win in the tournament after defeats to Bangladesh and India in their earlier games.
Rashid feels this victory will give them the confidence to get their World Cup campaign back on the right track.
"This is a big win for us. This kind of performance gives us the belief that we can beat any side on any day. It will give us the energy for the rest of the World Cup."
