Would be a different game had Liton-Tanzid batted longer: Shanto
Bangladesh's stand-in captain Najmul Hossain Shanto said that had openers Liton Das and Najmul Hossain Shanto carried on after completing their half-centuries, their ICC ODI World Cup match against India could've ended differently.
The Tigers suffered their third straight defeat in the tournament on Thursday, losing to hosts India by seven wickets at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune.
The writing was on the wall for Bangladesh after they posted a modest 256-8 against India on a flat track.
The Tigers failed to cash in on the rollicking start provided by openers Tanzid and Liton, who formed a 93-run partnership off 14.4 overs - Bangladesh's best ever opening stand in World Cups.
Tanzid hit his maiden half-century in ODIs, finishing on 51 off 41 balls, while Liton made 66 off 82 balls.
However, in the post-match presentation, Shanto said that had either of the openers carried on and scored a big one, it would've been a 'different ballgame'.
"Tanzid batted really well and all the fast bowlers bowled pretty well. But we did not finish well (with the bat). If Tanzid and Liton could've batted longer, could have been a different ballgame. Hopefully in the next game, our batters can take responsibility," Shanto said.
Shanto had to stand-in as the skipper against India in place of Shakib Al Hasan, who is recovering from a quad injury.
The team management has remained secretive about the seriousness of Shakib's injury, however, Shanto hoped that the all-rounder will be ready to return in Bangladesh's next match in the World Cup, which will be against South Africa on October 24 in Mumbai.
"He (Shakib) is recovering well. I am hoping he can be fit for the next match."
