T20 World Cup: Get to know the captains via interesting facts
The ninth edition of the ICC men's T20 World Cup kicks off on June 2 [Bangladesh time], with Canada facing one of the hosts the USA in Dallas. As the cricketing world gears up for another thrilling event, let's delve into some interesting facts about the captains of the 20 participants -- this time, focusing on West Indies' Rovman Powell.
ROVMAN POWELL
Co-hosts West Indies will be eyeing a record third title in the ICC T20 World Cup this year and the man who will lead them in their charge for glory is Rovman Powell.
Powell, a powerful right-hander known for his ability to muscle the ball over the boundary in the late-middle-order and can also bowl some part-time medium pace, is not the biggest name in the Caribbean squad which has T20 superstars like Andre Russell, Nicolas Pooran and Shimron Hetmyer.
However, Powell has been instrumental in the West Indies' uptick in T20Is after a lull period, playing a crucial role in their series wins over England, India and South Africa last year.
Since becoming captain, Powell has been on a roll, averaging 37.41 at a strike rate of 172.69 with the bat.
Powell has previously played in just one T20 World Cup, in 2022 in Australia, where he failed to showcase his talents, making just 39 runs in three outings.
This time, the 30-year-old will have the chance to make a mark in the tournament both as a player and as a captain in his own backyard.
