Kyrgios will quit if ...
Tennis star Nick Kyrgios has threatened to quit his sport so many times the throw away declarations barely raise the eyebrows of his fans any more.
But he's never made a threat to walk away quite like this.
In Q&A session with fans on Twitter, Kyrgios declared he could leave tennis before his 27th birthday — as he has previously flagged.
His most striking revelation however, was his announcement that he will walk away from tennis if he wins the US Open at Flushing Meadows.
He tweeted: “if I won the US open now u would never see me again.”
It came after Kyrgios had originally told a Twitter user he could walk away in five years time regardless of the path his career takes.
“It's not the same”
Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic have both said that they miss Roger Federer, who was forced to miss the US Open for the first time since 1999.
Federer, the winner of a record 17 majors and a five-time champion in New York, shut down his season to rest a knee injury which was aggravated in a semi-final loss at Wimbledon.
"Roger today is having the same injury issues, so I wish him a fast recovery," stated Nadal.
"The fans miss the players, the tour needs the players," he added.
World No.1 Djokovic, who beat Federer to win a second US Open title last year, also felt sympathy for the 35-year-old Swiss.
“It's not the same when you don't have Roger for the tournament, for the fans."
