Death valley in Chattogram hills: are the authorities doing enough?
Every year, in heavy rainfall during monsoon, landslides destroy homes and take lives in Chattogram's hilly areas. This is the only time of the year that the authorities try to take action to prevent this regular catastrophe.
Illegal and high-risk habitation, often on dangerously dug up hillsides, infests the highlands in Chattogram. However, despite regular casualties caused by landslides, the authorities remain negligent in taking proper actions. Half-hearted and temporary evictions start only when the monsoon brings imminent risk. Again throughout the rest of the year, the authorities fall back into inaction and illegal habitation begins to spring up.
