“I remember!” says Dory
Last week, I braved it out, took a risk and visited the Star Cineplex at the Bashundhara complex to watch 'Finding Dory.' The hall that could probably fit more than 500-800 people, had only half a dozen viewers that day. Clearly, people are frightened to visit malls and cinemas after the Gulshan Tragedy that happened on July 1. However, the constant fear, a feeling of uncertainty and confusion simply got to some of the young folks of Dhaka city. They bought tickets, sat down with what I like to call 'chicken chips' but which are actually termed Pop Chicken, and sat down to watch 'Finding Dory' – and they definitely did not leave unhappy.
Filled with adorable looking fish, seals speaking in a British accent, a friendly whale, an octopus that can strangely change colours – the animated movie of Finding Dory is a complete delight not only for young children, but also adults.
For 'Finding Nemo' fans, the movie also features Nemo and his father Marlin, who eventually turn out to be Dory's family.
The movie describes Dory's journey in the ocean world, where she looks for her parents Charlie and Jenny, who she had lost… she simply can't remember when! Dory suffers from short term memory loss and it is how she still goes about enjoying life and inspiring little Nemo and other young beings in the sea – is what the story is all about.
Ellen Degeneres, the famous comedian and also the host and writer of the famous show, The Ellen Show, plays Dory (or rather plays her voice), much to everyone's amusement. Her quick wit and the ability to speak whale seemed natural -- something that Ellen would do even on her show, whether playing Dory or not! In fact, when Dory goes through her bouts of forgetfulness, she comes up with some of the most hilarious lines. One such moment was when Dory forgets about her being an Assistant Teacher taking the school of fish out on an excursion trip, and begins to talk about where baby fish come from, thinking of being a part of a sex education class!
The movie speaks of patience, determination, love, attachment, promises and most importantly, never to give up on family. Towards the end when Dory feels lost, forgetting why she was within the dense kelps, trying to fight the darkness – she finds a shell and remembers her parents telling her to follow the series of shells and she could get home. And that's exactly what she did.
Lined up with extraordinary actors and a fantastic representation of, not only the undersea world, but also the marine life institute and let's people travel through pipes, this 3D animation at the Star Cineplex is a must watch for the Dhakaites.
