LSS’s ‘Save Green Movement’ looks to make a lasting impact
As plastic bags and other inorganic wastes pile up and continue to harm our natural environment, the Lal Sabuj Society (LSS) intends to keep Barishal clean with their initiative, 'Save Green Movement'.
They started their work at the floating market and guava orchards at Kuriana, Athghor, and Jhalokathi in Pirojpur. These are some of the most popular tourist locations in Asia. However, after the tourist season ends, the places are generally left unclean for the rest of the year, as plastic materials cannot be decomposed naturally.
The volunteers of LSS started cleaning the whole area as soon as monsoon took off and got rid of the plastic materials and other toxic wastes in the first few weeks of starting their initiative. They also managed to get rid of the floating wastes piling up by the side of the water canal of the market. Awareness campaigns among the boatmen and other garden workers were also conducted. 35 dustbins were donated. To help maintain cleanliness, they also organised awareness campaigns and workshops at Athghor High School and Kiriyana School.
Soon, 'Save Green Movement' will be introduced to other parts of the district, including the Bangabandhu Uddyan and Barishal DC Lake. Many young students are volunteers for LSS. As of now, LSS has donated 50 dustbins for this initiative.
