Taking The Flourist forward
A Communication Design graduate from Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne, Mufrad Zafar took up advertising for a few years after returning to Dhaka. Soon, he realised that he was not really drawn to the profession and he needed to venture into a career path that was creative and satisfying.
A foodie at heart, Mufrad teamed up with artist and pastry chef Saria Saguaro, as the Head of Operations of her cake studio, The Flourist. Saria and Mufrad met through mutual friends, before meeting again a good while later as design professionals online. "She was the first person to offer me a design job. That too, because of a random image that I had posted online," says Mufrad. "That project never took off, but it started things."
He also spoke about his vision for The Flourist. "I want to focus on the aesthetics of design and at the same time, provide products that are accessible to the masses and can break new grounds in our part of the world," says Mufrad, who is interested in how women entrepreneurs and the online marketplace come together to inform the new wave of customers today. "Everyone needs cake, after all." The Flourist also hosts baking demonstration classes for adults, cookie baking classes for kids, cake tasting events and supper clubs. Mufrad is hopeful about expanding The Flourist and adding new products and services to it.
