Ceramic and porcelain tiles are top contenders for countertops due to their durability and ease of maintenance. Resistant to stains and scratches, these tiles are particularly ideal for kitchens where spills and wear are common. Porcelain, in particular, is known for its resilience, offering an elegant and refined appearance without sacrificing practicality.

For those seeking a more luxurious finish, natural stone tiles such as granite, marble, or quartz are exceptional options. These materials not only exude sophistication but also bring unique veining patterns, ensuring no two countertops are exactly alike. Marble is a favorite among those looking to add a touch of classic charm to their kitchen, while granite provides a more rugged, yet equally stunning option. 

"Usually marble and granite tiles are popular choices for countertop. We especially recommend granite tiles for countertop as it has less water absorption, around 0.5%. Large, single slab of granite is used for countertops to eliminate the need for joints," mentioned Md. Mahmudur Rahman, Brand Manager of RAK Ceramics.

On a similar note, architect Faridi said, "Granite and quartz are highly recommended for countertop because they are thicker, non-porous, more durable, and less affected by stain or scratch. Specially, quartz remains totally stain free due to its low absorption property. Non-porous tiles are recommended for countertops as they absorb less spill or dirt and are easy to clean and maintain."

Since the countertop is the main working zone in the kitchen, darker colored tiles should be chosen so that dirt or stains are not much visible. For a more cohesive look, selecting tiles that match your backsplash or flooring can create a seamless flow throughout the space.

From ground to grand

Floor tiles are the cornerstone of a kitchen to elevate the cooking space into a stylish yet functional heart of your home. Porcelain or natural-stone made tiles are suitable for kitchen floors. With water resistance and easy maintenance, they effortlessly combine form and function. Since the kitchen is a wet zone, anti-slip property will eliminate the chance of accident," said Mohammed Ashraful Haque, General Manager, Akij Ceramics Limited. For durability, he further added that kitchen floor tiles should have the strength to endure 40N force per meter square.

The texture and finish of tiles can completely transform the feel of your kitchen. Matte finishes lend a contemporary look, and minimalistic vibe. On the other hand, glossy tiles bring light and airiness, reflecting natural sunlight and brightening the entire space. Subway tiles, herringbone patterns, and large-format tiles are all trending in kitchen design, each offering a unique appearance for your kitchen.

"Glossy or matte-finish tiles work well for floors. As kitchen areas are often small, smaller-sized glossy tiles are popular. Anti-skid features are essential due to frequent water usage," said Md. Shahidul Islam, Manager (Laboratory & Product Development) at Khadim Ceramics.

In addition to color and pattern, the size of the tiles plays a significant role in setting the tone. Larger tiles create an open, seamless feel, making small kitchens appear more spacious, while smaller tiles can add intricate detailing and depth.

Tiles for kitchen walls and backsplashes are more than just practical surfaces; they can work as transformative design elements for your culinary space. Ceramic and porcelain tiles remain the go-to materials for walls as well due to their durability, ease of maintenance, and vast range of design options.

"Wall tiles have less thickness than floor tiles. Since the wall does not have to endure much pressure, regular ceramic or porcelain tiles are a good fit. Wall tiles have a different setup than floors in the kitchen. Choosing decorative tiles that go with the kitchen ambiance will provide an aesthetically pleasing look," explains Faridi. 

Backsplashes, in particular, serve as the focal point above countertops, offering a chance to play with color and texture. Whether it's a herringbone pattern in soft blues or a dramatic marble design, the backsplash can serve as a captivating visual contrast to the rest of the kitchen's decor.

"Homeowners often prefer tiles specifically designed for backsplashes. Pivotal properties for perfect pick

Stain resistance: Tiles with low porosity, such as porcelain or glazed ceramic, resist water absorption, reducing the risk of stains. Glazed tiles are easier to clean and maintain, making them ideal for countertops and backsplashes.

Heat resistance: Most tiles are heated at a high kilning temperature at around 1200°C, making them perfect for withstanding typical kitchen temperatures.

Slip resistance: Tiles with anti-slip properties and less water absorption are perfect for kitchens to prevent accidents caused by spills or moisture.

Abrasion resistance: Tiles with PEI Class 4 offer the highest abrasion resistance. Manufacturers offer PEI Class 4 tiles in various sizes, such as 60x60cm, 30x60cm, and 15x90cm.

Resistance to chemicals: Kitchen tiles must resist damage from cleaning agents, oils, and acidic substances such as vinegar or lemon juice.

Costs depend on tile size and surface quality. Uneven surfaces may require rough plastering before installation, increasing expenses. Tile adhesive is recommended for installation, as it ensures durability without curing and secures tiles for a long time.
