Sust teachers confine VC

A group of teachers today confined the vice-chancellor of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (Sust) to his office for around one-and-a-half hours.

The teachers of Bangla department at the university staged the sit-in confining VC Prof Md Aminul Haque Bhuiyan to press home their demand for providing sufficient seating arrangements.

The protesters locked the main gate of the VC office around 11:00am, reports our Sylhet correspondent.

After getting assurance to meet their demand, the agitators unlocked the office and allowed him to go at about 12:30pm.  

Farzana Siddiqa, associate professor of Bangla department, told the daily that there has no seating arrangement for the departmental head and other teachers at the department.

The teachers have informed the matter to the authorities several times but they paid no heed, she said.

Admitting the crisis of sitting space at many departments, Sust Proctor Himadri Sekhar Roy said they will discuss the matter to the agitating teachers.

On April 30, Md Abdur Rahim, head of the Bangla department, wrote about the problem to the committee, which deals with the space allocation, but did not get any response from it, Abdur Rahim said.  

Prof Aminul, also chairman of the committee, could not be reached for his comments, despite several attempts over mobile phone, the daily reported.
