"Duality" is an artistic collaboration between Salma Zakia Bristy and her son, Mashrafi Aveen. Each mother shares a unique story with her child, and Bristy is no exception. A visual artist and mother of two, her younger son Aveen has Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) with ADHD personality traits, as diagnosed by doctors when he was 18 months old.
One winter evening in January, I found myself at the Kala Kendra Gallery in Lalmatia, Dhaka. Currently hosting a group art exhibition, Kala Kendra presents “Jogsutro”, featuring 15 Bangladeshi artists who have returned after completing their studies at Rabindra Bharati University.
“Texture and mixture”, with 67 artworks on display, was inaugurated on July 28 at Kala Kendra in the presence of economist and writer Anu Mohammad, and political activist, feminist and environmentalist Khushi Kabir.
The question we ask ourselves forever is –how do we evaluate art? Very often, our prejudice makes us assess an artwork depending on an artist’s experience, age, gender, or simply grandeur.
The installation in the Kala Kendra premises invites the general mass to the venue and creates a welcoming place, connected with the urban spaces.
The interior of Kala Kendra holds Tamima’s surreal artworks. Being asked about ‘dualmonism’, Tamima said that it is the art philosophy of Salim Al Deen where an idea or a concept can be expressed through several art forms; just like Dhaka Theater actors performed “Prachya” brilliantly, she attempted to depict the play through her paintings.
The female physique has always been an object of love, passion, desire, and lust regardless of race, caste, place, and time. Human world and its growth revolves around the womb. However, the body of a woman is also a reflection of male domination and violence. And the wounds it receives, visible or not, can tell horrifying stories. Dilara Begum Jolly’s solo exhibition ‘In/visible’ is a depiction of female bodies and the injuries inflicted upon them.

Kala Kendra is hosting a curatorial exhibition titled 'Unraveling' by Kazmin Samia. The exhibition started from 4 October and will last till 18 October, starting from 5pm to 8pm everyday.
