Pori Moni's petition for canceling narcotics case dismissed

Actress Pori Moni

A Dhaka court today dismissed a petition submitted for cancelling the case filed against film actress Pori Moni under the Narcotics Control Act.

Judge Mohammad Nazrul Islam of the Special Judge's Court-10 of Dhaka passed the order after her lawyer Nelanjona Refat submitted an application.

In the petition, the lawyer said the stipulated time for completing the trial in the case has already been expired. So, the case should be cancelled as the court failed to dispose of it within the stipulated 135 working days.

While opposing the defence's plea, the prosecution said it is not mandatory to dispose of the case within 135 working days. So, the petition should be rejected.

Upon hearing both the sides, the judge turned down the defence's plea and said the trial will continue.

The judge then set December 15 for next hearing of the case.

Pori Moni's personal appearance was earlier exempted and her lawyer represented her at the court in her absence.

Pori Moni's two other associates -- Ashraful Islam Dipu and Kabir Hossain -- now on bail were present in the court today.

Kazi Golam Mostafa, inspector of Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and investigation officer of the case, submitted the charge sheet to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court of Dhaka on October 4 last year.
