Bangladeshi umpire Shathira Jakir Jessy is set to become the first women umpire from the country to officiate in a Cricket World Cup at any level as the ICC has named her as one of the 20 match officials who will stand in the forthcoming ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup in Malaysia, beginning this Saturday.
Even though Bangladesh crashed out of the Women’s Asia Cup with a crushing defeat to India in the semifinal, there will be some Bangladeshi representation in the final between India and Sri Lanka in Dambulla today in the form of umpire Shathira Jakir Jessy.
“Actually, this is the biggest tournament after the World Cup. I have really worked hard in the last two years for this and finally, my target has been fulfilled,” Shathira Jakir Jessy said.
Why the starkly different reactions to the same occurrence, you may ask. And the answer is painfully obvious, hidden in plain sight but remains unspoken.
Though the match ended well for Jessy, things took a turn for the unexpected once the media took over.
Jessy, however, was satisfied with the entire experience and considered it a “big achievement”.
Jessy shared her experience of officiating in her first DPL game and spoke about her upcoming assignments in an interview with The Daily Star
