Gamification of teaching languages: A realistic prospect?

The gamification of language teaching has been generating attention from Bangladeshi educators due to its effectiveness.

The psychological costs of an uprising

The systemic issues make even the admission of one’s struggles a minefield

BOOK REVIEW: NONFICTION / Alternative routes

The book as a whole is a rigorously pursued exercise in the close reading of a fascinating and diverse array of modern texts that aren't quite in the category of the canonical mainstream.

OPINION / Are you what you read?

Few experiences in life can prepare us to be more sensitive, more inclusive, and generally kinder human beings than reading.

Life skills children should know by age 10

A burning debate that has been making the rounds recently is that only a handful of people will ever need the principles of algebra in their lives, but everyone will need to do their taxes at some point. Schools cannot and should not have to teach crucial life skills to children because those are best learned under the loving guidance of guardians. Even if 10 is too early to learn how to do complex calculations, there are a good number of basic life skills every child should know by the end of the first decade of their lives. Here’s what child-development experts, career planners and business leaders recommend:

MUSINGS / On the chaos of teaching English

I discover that teaching is more about reading people.

How children can learn empathy from parents and teachers

Empathy is a complex socio-emotional skill to develop.

MUSINGS / Notes of a first-time English teacher

As the white hot sun pierced through the soufflé clouds on an afternoon a lifetime ago, my aunt and I leaned back a little too precariously on our rattan armchairs while talking about the allure of academe.

Blindness not an obstacle

To make sense of the world around us, everybody sometimes relies on mental visualisation, using the proverbial “mind's eye”. Teacher
