The members of a co-operative organisation brought success in group farming by using unused sandy chars of Teesta river
For the first time, carrots are being grown commercially in char areas of Teesta river, where farmers previously grew the vegetable only for personal consumption.
Thousands of people in low-lying areas under the Hatibandha upazila of Lalmonirhat, adjacent to Teesta Barrage, have left their homesteads this (August 1, 2022) evening as the Teesta River water has been flowing 25cm above the danger level due to the onrush of water from upstream.
If it were before 1983, people would be seen fishing at the exact same spot where children now play football, on Teesta’s sandy floor lying arid and barren. The river is no longer blessed with water, except for a few months of the year.
