CES 2025: BMW unveils panoramic iDrive HUD
At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2025, BMW has recently revealed a futuristic update to its iDrive operating system, featuring a fully customisable panoramic heads-up display (HUD) that spans the width of the windshield from pillar to pillar.
The Panoramic iDrive HUD eliminates the traditional dashboard gauge cluster, instead projecting essential driving information such as speed, navigation, road signs, and state of charge directly onto the windshield. BMW says that this setup, which leverages a narrow black strip at the base of the windshield, helps drivers make quicker decisions by keeping their eyes closer to the road. The 3D display is designed to be visible not only to the driver but also to passengers.
The new HUD is set to debut in an as-yet-unnamed X-class SUV built on BMW's all-electric Neue Klasse platform, scheduled for release at the end of 2025.
According to BMW, the technology will not require a specialty windshield, with a standard black print and a specialised film ensuring clear 3D visuals without additional replacement costs. In addition to the HUD, BMW has introduced a reimagined steering wheel with haptic feedback buttons. The updated iDrive system also features a new infotainment screen with enhanced customisation options.
