Cyclone Sitrang downed 7,343 mobile towers in 19 districts
The cyclone Sitrang that swept over the country last night (October 24) had downed 7,343 mobile towers in the country's coastal areas, a report from the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) reveals.
In 19 districts of the coastal areas, a total of 13,902 mobile towers of all four telecom networks of the country were affected. Grameenphone took the highest hit, losing 2,863 of its 4,718 towers in the storm. Teletalk had the lowest hit with 610 towers being down. To compare, Teletalk also had the lowest number of towers with 1,215 sites.
The majority of the mobile towers have now resumed operations, according to industry insiders.
Earlier during the storm, all digital communications, including internet service in the coastal areas, of the country were impacted. Mobile networks faced disruptions due to power outages and delays in tackling those issues due to adverse weather conditions. Fibre optic cables in coastal areas were also damaged, along with prolonged electricity outage, causing disruption in broadband internet.
