Google will now let you use AI to write email, take notes, make slides

Google has announced a number of upcoming generative AI features for Google's Workspace apps, which include Google Docs, Gmail, Sheets, and Slides.

A few of the new features include the ability to create AI imagery, audio, and video to illustrate presentations in Slides, as well as new ways to generate, summarise, and brainstorm text with AI in Google Docs (similar to how many people use OpenAI's ChatGPT).

This essentially means that Artificial intelligence will soon be able to help office workers who have ever dreaded writing a briefing for their boss, taking notes in meetings, creating a digital presentation of their ideas, or combing through lengthy email threads to catch up on the most recent projects.

The tech giant intends to incorporate generative AI into all of its workspace products so that it can produce entire documents or images in response to a prompt. By selecting a new wand icon that will show up in their apps, users will be able to access these features.

Within the next couple of weeks, Google intends to start rolling out some features to selected enterprise customers, starting with writing features in Google Docs and Gmail. When additional features might be made accessible is unknown.

"When it comes to delivering the full potential of generative AI across Workspace, we're just getting started. In the same way that we revolutionized real-time collaboration with co-authoring in Docs 17 years ago, we're excited to transform creation and collaboration all over again in Workspace," wrote Google in a product announcement blog post.

The complete list of AI-powered features that Google says will eventually be added to Workspace apps is shown below:

  • Gmail drafts, replies, sum up and prioritising messages
  • In Docs, generating ideas, editing them, and then rewriting them
  • Slide will automatically generate images, audio, and video, and can help you bring your creative vision to life
  • Utilise auto-completion, formula generation, and contextual categorisation in Sheets to transform raw data into insights and analysis
  • Creating fresh backgrounds and note-taking in Meet
  • Enabling workflows in Chat to complete tasks
