Italy close to $1.5 billion deal with Elon Musk’s SpaceX: report
Italy is nearing a €1.5 billion ($1.55 billion) deal with Elon Musk's SpaceX to provide secure communications for its government, as per a recent report by Bloomberg News. The proposed five-year agreement, which still needs final approval, has already been endorsed by Italy's Intelligence Services and Defence Ministry, according to the report.
The deal would see SpaceX offer encrypted phone and internet services to the government, along with secure communications for the military in the Mediterranean. It also includes satellite services to assist during emergencies like natural disasters or terrorist attacks.
This potential partnership follows Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's recent visit to Florida, where she met with President-elect Donald Trump at his Mar-a-Lago estate. Meloni has also built a close connection with Musk, whose Starlink satellite system is being tested in Italy as a way to improve internet access in remote areas, states Bloomberg.
While SpaceX and Italy's Defence Ministry have not commented, the talks highlight Italy's push to upgrade its telecommunications systems with cutting-edge technology. A decision is expected soon, adds the report.
