Tombot Inc., a US-based robotics company, has recently unveiled 'Jennie', a lifelike robotic puppy designed to provide emotional support for people with Alzheimer's, dementia, and other mental health challenges. As per Tombot, the robotic pet aims to serve as a low-maintenance alternative for individuals who may struggle to care for a real animal.

According to the company's official website, 'Jennie', modelled after a small Labrador Retriever puppy, responds to touch and voice commands using built-in sensors and AI technology. It features recordings of real puppy sounds, and users can interact with it through simple commands like 'speak', to which Jennie responds with a bark. The puppy also comes with a smartphone app that allows users to name the pet, customise its settings, and track interactions.

To develop Jennie's design, Tombot collaborated with Jim Henson's Creature Shop, known for its animatronic expertise. The team used advanced materials and techniques to create nuanced facial expressions and behaviours that resonate with users, as per the company.

According to Tombot, Jennie's design and functionality aim to meet the needs of seniors with dementia and others facing mental health challenges such as depression and PTSD.

'Jennie' was recently featured in the CES 2025 event by Tom Stevens, Co-Founder and CEO of Tombot. As per a report by Reuters, Tombot is expected to go on sale on late 2025, and will be priced at $1,500 per unit, or sold via rental models for institutions such as assisted living facilities.
