Microsoft is making around 6,000 layoffs: Report

Microsoft is laying off approximately 6,000 employees, or around 3% of its global workforce, according to a recent report by CNBC.
A Microsoft spokesperson said in a statement that the company is implementing "organisational changes necessary to best position the company for success in a dynamic marketplace". The spokesperson clarified to CNBC that the layoffs are not performance-related.
Despite the job reductions, Microsoft recently posted stronger-than-expected financial results. In April, the company reported $25.8 billion in quarterly net income and issued a positive outlook for future growth, as per the report.
As of the end of June, Microsoft employed 228,000 people globally. According to Washington state on Tuesday, 1,985 of the job cuts will impact the company's Redmond headquarters, with 1,510 roles located in-office.
This marks one of Microsoft's largest rounds of layoffs since it cut 10,000 positions in 2023. A smaller wave of performance-related dismissals was announced in January, but the latest reductions are considered broader in scope and unrelated to individual performance.
