NASA Astronaut Joseph M. Acaba shares life insights at BRAC
BRAC University hosted an event on December 15 with NASA astronaut Joseph M. Acaba, whose life story of resilience and determination inspired students to dream big and overcome challenges.
During the event Acaba shared his journey from the very beginning of his life to becoming a celebrated space explorer, underscoring the importance of education, perseverance, and self-growth.
Born in California to Puerto Rican parents, Acaba shared how his family's values shaped his life and perspectives. Despite his grandparents never attending school, they nurtured his curiosity for science and motivated him to pursue education. Acaba credited their influence, along with his father's insistence on higher education, for steering him toward success.
Reflecting on his youth, Acaba admitted to making poor decisions and resisting college initially, preferring to earn money through manual work. "I loved working in the metal shop," he said, acknowledging how his father's advice helped him realise that education is key to long-term success.
From earning a degree in geology to joining the Peace Corps and the military, Acaba's career trajectory showcased his diverse experiences. He even worked as a schoolteacher, which he noted as a pivotal moment in shaping his character. "Without my teacher, I wouldn't be an astronaut," he remarked, emphasising the transformative power of mentors.
Acaba also shared about his NASA interview experience, where his background in metalwork, military service, and volunteer efforts proved invaluable. He also drew fascinating parallels between his Peace Corps work in the Bahamas and his life in space, stressing the importance of adaptability and teamwork.
Sharing that mistakes are a huge part of life Acaba advised the students in the session saying, "Don't be afraid to make mistakes. Just make sure you're growing."
An attendee of the event said, "Hearing the astronaut's story made me realise that every experience, no matter how small, can prepare you for something bigger."
