OpenAI has officially launched Sora, its text-to-video AI model, in a recent livestream, marking the latest in its 12-day "Ship-mas" series of product announcements.

Available now at Sora.com, the platform allows ChatGPT subscribers in the US and many other countries to generate AI-powered videos, with features such as text-based video creation, animated images, and video remixing.

Sora introduces two subscription tiers. ChatGPT Plus, priced at $20 per month, offers users up to 50 priority videos (1,000 credits) at 720p resolution and five-second durations. Meanwhile, the newly introduced $200-per-month ChatGPT Pro plan includes unlimited video generations, up to 500 priority creations, 1080p resolution, and durations of up to 20 seconds. ChatGPT Pro users can also download watermark-free videos and generate up to five videos simultaneously.

During a livestream event, OpenAI demonstrated Sora's features, including a community-generated feed of AI videos, storyboard functionality for creating sequences of videos from prompts, and tools to turn photos into animations. The platform also offers a "remix" tool for fine-tuning video outputs and an AI blending feature to combine scenes.

To promote transparency, all videos generated through Sora will carry watermarks and C2PA metadata indicating they were created with AI. Users uploading content to the platform must agree to terms prohibiting submissions featuring people under 18, explicit or violent content, and copyrighted material. OpenAI has warned that violations could lead to account suspension or bans.

Rohan Sahai, Sora's product lead, acknowledged the challenges of moderating such a platform, stating, "We want to prevent illegal activity of Sora, but we also balance that with creative expression. He also added that the team is "starting cautiously" and if "moderation falls short, we welcome feedback."

While Sora is widely available, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman noted that the model's launch in Europe and the UK could face delays due to regulatory considerations.

The debut follows controversy after a group of artists reportedly leaked details of Sora, accusing OpenAI of using their contributions for "unpaid R&D and PR."
