Pro-Russian hackers target Italian ministry and airport websites: report
A wave of cyber attacks disrupted ten official websites in Italy on Saturday, including those of the Foreign Ministry and Milan's two airports, temporarily taking them offline, according to a recent report by Reuters.
As per Reuters, the pro-Russian hacking group 'Noname057(16)' claimed responsibility via Telegram, branding the attack a response to Italy's alleged "Russophobia".
The country's cyber security agency has identified the incident as a 'Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS)' attack, where attackers flood systems with overwhelming data traffic to cripple them.
Rapid intervention by cyber security teams ensured the disruption was contained in under two hours, according to an agency spokesperson.
Although the websites of Milan's Linate and Malpensa airports were affected, a spokesperson for their operator, SEA, confirmed flights were unaffected and mobile apps continued to function normally, states the report.
The Reuters report further states that investigations are ongoing, with authorities treating the pro-Russian group's involvement as a credible lead.
