Team from Bangladesh ranks 2nd at Robotics World Cup 2023
Team Atlas from Bangladesh ranked second worldwide at the World Robotics Championship 2023, one of the largest robotics competitions in the world, with more than 300 participating teams. The global competition is also known as Robotics World Cup 2023.
This year the competition had 22 countries competing, including but not limited to the USA, Russia, Nepal, Brazil, Argentina, Portugal, Paraguay, Egypt, Uzbekistan, Iran, Oman, Nigeria, Malaysia, and more. Held at Noida, Delhi NCR, India, from July 25 to 27, "Technologies for a Better World" was the official motto of the TechnoXian World Robotics Championship 2023.
The event was organised across nine tracks, including the 'WRC Innovation Contest', in which Team Atlas became the first runners-up. In this category, teams showed their innovation by published research work, field data, or both. The segment is judged on how the robots of the participating teams showcase rigour, accuracy, utility, and innovation.
This year, Team Atlas brought two robots; Defender, a firefighting robot, and Atlas Spark, a multifunctional robot used for mining, investigation, and rescue. The team members were Sunny Jubayer (Brac University), Kazi Md Muhaimin Ul Islam Mahi (CCN UST), Mohaimenul Islam Sohan (Ahsanullah University of Science & Technology), Md Tanjir Arafat (BAF Shaheen College), Alvi Sakib Orin (Brac University), Shihab Ahmed Ananto (North South University), Nazif Ahiyan (Fayzur Rahman Ideal School & College), Md Rakibul Hasan Nishat (Daffodil University), MD Maruf Miah (Nirjhor Cantonment Public School), Md. Al Mahmud Alif (Fayzur Rahman Ideal School & College), Sakibul Ahsan Teeham (Brac University), and Jannatul Ferdous (Brac University). The team was advised by Md Saiful Islam (Senior Lecturer, BRAC University).
Regarding the recent achievement, Md Saiful Islam expressed his happiness, "Watching the robotics team grow from humble beginnings and excel has been an incredible journey." Sunny Jubayer, Team Leader of Team Atlas, shared, "We have participated in the championship three times, and we improved each year." He added that in 2019, when they first attended, they ranked 13th internationally. In 2022, they proceeded to the finals and ranked fourth. This time, they have ranked 2nd internationally. The team hopes to improve further and maintain a consistent performance.
