CD Projekt,  the Polish video game developer, has unveiled the first cinematic trailer for The Witcher 4, the highly anticipated successor to its critically acclaimed 2015 release, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

This time, players will take on the role of Ciri, the adoptive daughter of Geralt of Rivia, the protagonist of the previous trilogy. Set after the events of Andrzej Sapkowski's Witcher books, the game follows Ciri as a fully-fledged witcher navigating the Continent and battling monsters. In the cinematic teaser, she confronts a Bauk, rescuing a villager from being sacrificed.

CD Projekt described the forthcoming instalment as "the most immersive and ambitious open-world Witcher game to date". Built using Unreal Engine 5, the game is currently in full-scale production. However, no release date has been announced, with analysts predicting a debut in 2026 or 2027.

The Witcher franchise, which debuted in 2007, has sold over 75 million copies globally, solidifying its position as a cornerstone of the medieval fantasy genre. Its success also inspired a Netflix series starring Henry Cavill, who will be replaced by Liam Hemsworth in the fourth season.

The announcement comes after CD Projekt's release of Cyberpunk 2077, leading the company to adopt a more cautious approach with its latest project. Despite the excitement surrounding the teaser, the company's stock saw a 4.4% decline on December 13.
