Kamal Hossain
Dr Kamal Hossain, best known as the architect of the Constitution of Bangladesh, has been a tireless advocate for freedom of expression and a steadfast defender of human rights and democracy. As a jurist, politician and lawyer, he has made a profound impact on the country's political and legal landscape.
Born in Calcutta in 1937, Dr Kamal rose to prominence during the Bengali nationalist movement. He, along with other prominent lawyers, represented Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in the Agartala Conspiracy Case, showcasing his prowess as a legal expert and commitment to justice and human rights.
Following Bangladesh's independence, Dr Kamal served in Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's government in several capacities, including as the minister of law, the minister of petroleum and minerals, and the minister of foreign affairs. It was during this time that he was tasked with the monumental responsibility of drafting the Constitution of Bangladesh. Under his leadership, the Constitution was crafted to reflect the values of freedom, justice, and human rights that have since become the foundation of Bangladesh's democracy.
As a distinguished constitutional lawyer, Dr Kamal has dedicated his career to safeguarding fundamental human rights, particularly freedom of expression. He has steadfastly acted as a champion for journalists and free media, offering his expert legal support pro bono every time a journalist was harassed for performing his or her professional duty. He is also the founder trustee and chairman of the Bangladesh Legal Aid and Services Trust (BLAST), a legal organisation that focuses on providing services to underprivileged and marginalised communities.
Dr Kamal has made a significant impact on the global stage as well. He served two terms in the UN Compensation Commission and was UN Special Rapporteur on the Human Rights Situation in Afghanistan. He also chaired and was a member of international tribunals, including the International Court of Justice and the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes.
The Daily Star proudly recognises Dr Kamal as a luminary of freedom and human rights. With this tribute, we celebrate his exceptional and unrelenting commitment to the principles of freedom of thought and expression.
