MK Anwar gets bail, ‘no bar to release’
The High Court yesterday granted bail to BNP leader MK Anwar for six months in two vandalism and arson cases, clearing his way to walk out of jail.
The bench of Justice Mirza Hussain Haider and Justice Ashish Ranjan Das passed the orders after hearing two bail pleas filed by Anwar.
Anwar’s lawyer Sagir Hossain Leon told The Daily Star there is no legal to his client’s release following the HC orders. Anwar is now in a prison cell of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University.
Leon said the two cases were filed with Wari and Bhatara Police Stations against MK Anwar on January 30 and February 4 last year respectively under the Explosive Substances Act and Special Powers Act on charges of vandalizing vehicles and blasting cocktails.
The accused BNP leader filed two petitions with the HC on December 20 last year seeking bail in the cases. Deputy Attorney General Md Bashir Ullah opposed the bail petitions.
