2 launches collide in Meghna due to dense fog, 10 injured

At lease 10 people were injured when two launches on Dhaka-Barishal route collided head-on due to the dense fog in the Meghna river of Chandpur early today.

The collision took place between MV Kirtankhola-10 and MV Prince Awlad-10 around 2:30am at Hiran point of the river, said passengers and river port officials.

Mohammad Abdur Razzak, deputy director and river port officer of BIWTA in Barishal, confirmed the incident and said that several passengers suffered injuries during the accident, but no one is in serious condition.

"There is no significant damage, but the collision has caused some damage to the front sides of both launches" he said.

However, there were more than 1,200 passengers in the two launches, he added.

Najmul Alam Nobin, a senior assistant secretary of the Planning Commission who along with his family was travelling to Dhaka by MV Kirtankhola-10, said "The cabin fan fell on my wife during the collision and she was slightly injured."

"And we narrowly escaped," he added.

Md Ismail Hossain, joint director of the Maritime Safety and Traffic Management Department of Dhaka Sadarghat Office, said that the Kirtankhola reached Dhaka with its passengers safely in the morning. Due to the accident, the launch was a little late, he said.

On the other hand, 580 passengers of the MV Prince Awlad-10 were shifted to another launch, Shuvoraj-9. And then, it reached Barishal ghat six to seven hours after the scheduled time.

A passenger of MV Kirtankhola-10 launch, Monir Hossain, said not only the front part of the Kirtankhola damaged in the collision, but more than 20 motorcycles on the launch were damaged.

The passengers demanded an investigation into the incident.
