Rohingyas share horrific experience

The Rohingyas, who fled to Bangladesh from Myanmar, shared their horrific experience of persecution by the neighbouring country’s army in Rakhine state.

The Daily Star reporter visited remote areas of Ghumdhum border in Bandarban’s Naikhyangchhari upazila where more than 10,000 Rohingyas took shelter since last night.

Talking to this correspondent, Rohingya woman Nurunnahar said her family has fled from Shaheb Bazar of Dekibunia of Maungdaw to escape persecution.

“They [Myanmar security forces] repress women and slaughter men,” she added.

Another refugee Emdadullah said his family has fled as the security forces set fire to their houses and shoot fire sensing Rohingyas’ presence. 

Refugee people from children to adult along with their domestic animals and birds managed to cross the border with ease to take shelter. They also sold their cattle and hens to the local people, witnesses said.

Several hundred more Rohingyas also took shelter on no man's land along with the border areas after failing to cross the border since August 25.

Bangladesh saw a fresh exodus of refugees after at least 89 people were killed as Rohingya militants besieged border posts in northern Rakhine state of Myanmar on August 25.
