PM attends opening session of UN General Assembly

Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina attended the General Debate in the 70th regular session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 70) that began at the UN headquarters here this morning. 

President of the 70th UNGA session Mogens Lykketoft, who is also a former speaker of the Danish Parliament, presided over the session. 

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon presented a report on the organizational activities in the inaugural session. Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina along with the heads of state and government of 193 countries attended the opening session.

The General Debate will be held without interruption over a period of nine working days. 

US President Barack Obama, Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff, Polish President Andrzej Duda and French President Francois Hollande were, among others, who delivered their speech on the opening day. 

The Bangladesh Premier is scheduled to address the General Assembly on Wednesday (September 30). 

As per the rules, each year the UN Secretary-General draws one member state amongst all to occupy the first seat in the General Assembly Hall. 

This year and throughout the 70th session, the delegation of Tuvalu will sit at the first desk at the right of the UNGA President, and the other countries will follow in the English alphabetical order. 

Earlier, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina joined the Welcome Reception hosted by Ban Ki-moon in honour of the heads of state and government. 

PM's son and Advisor on ICT Affairs Sajeeb Wazed Joy accompanied her. 

Sheikh Hasina will later today attend a luncheon reception to be hosted by the UN Secretary-General in honour of the heads of state and government at the UN headquarters.
