India ‘firmly’ backs ASEAN summit’s initiative on Myanmar
India has firmly backed the ASEAN summit's latest initiatives to help resolve Myanmar's political crisis.
"We welcome the ASEAN initiative on Myanmar agreed at the Summit held on April 24. Our diplomatic engagement with Myanmar will be aimed at strengthening these efforts," India's External Affairs Ministry said in a statement issued on Sunday night.
A statement from ASEAN chair Brunei said the summit reached a consensus on ending violence, constructive dialogue among all parties, and appointing a special envoy to facilitate the dialogue and their visit to Myanmar.
The External Affairs Ministry said that "India, as a friend of the people of Myanmar, will continue to play a constructive and meaningful role aimed at resolving the current situation in Myanmar. India's support to the democratic process in Myanmar remains steadfast."
