A Supreme Court lawyer has filed a writ petition with the High Court seeking its directive on the government to stop setting up cattle markets in coronavirus-affected areas including in Dhaka, Chattogram, Narayanganj, Gazipur and other city corporations.

Advocate Eunus Ali Akond submitted the petition as a public interest litigation to the HC yesterday through email, praying to this court to deliver the order to stop the setting up of cattle markets in such areas in order to prevent people from getting infected by the virus.

He said in the petition that the National Technical Advisory Committee has reportedly already made such recommendations to the authorities concerned of the government in order to stop the spread of the virus.

However, the authorities have allowed cattle markets in different coronavirus-affected areas including Dhaka South City Corporation ahead of Eid-ul-Azha, ignoring the recommendation, which is a violation of the law and the constitution, the lawyer stated in the writ petition.

Eunus Ali Akond told The Daily Star that the HC may hold hearing on the writ petition on Monday (July 20).
