Youth dies in police custody in Dhaka’s Paltan

A youth has died while in custody at Paltan Model Police Station last night after he was picked up from Gulistan area.

The deceased, Masud Rana (30), was a drug addict, claimed Walid Hossain, deputy commissioner (media) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.

"He was held with 300 pieces of yaba tablets from Gulistan area yesterday. He was an addict and got agitated at the police station as he was not getting drugs," the DC claimed adding that at one point, "Masud fell and hit his head on a wall injuring himself badly."

Following the incident, Masud was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where he was declared dead, he also said.

"However, doctors will confirm the cause of the death," the DC added.

Asked, the police official could not say whether there were any previous cases filed against Masud.

The Daily Star called several police officials of Motijheel Division including Paltan Police Station over phone repeatedly for comments regarding the incident, but no one responded.

No family member of the deceased has yet come to the hospital.
