BCL men lock in clashes on Dhaka College campus, exchange fire
Two groups of Dhaka College unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League locked into clashes and exchanged fire on the campus tonight (September 3, 2022).
The clash broke out between the two groups around 8:30 pm after one BCL man Shahariar Hasnat Jion was injured in an attack carried out by another BCL group following his protest for serving poor quality food at the canteen of the college on Thursday night, reports our Dhaka University correspondent.
According to the sources of the college, a commotion has been prevailing on the campus following the attack.
As the situation turned worse this evening centring the attack, BCL activists from northern and southern hostels of the college took a face-to-face stand.
Later, several chases and counter chases occurred between the two groups and they locked in clashes in phases where two rounds of bullets were fired, according to the sources at the college.
Prof Mohammad Yousuf, principal of the college, however, denied any firing incident.
"I have heard that there has been a dispute between two factions of Chhatra League over the attack on a student over food in the canteen. A student of the Southern Hostel was beaten up by the students of the North Hostel in connection with the incident," he said.
"Since then, tension is prevailing on the campus. But there was no exchange of fire. I have heard that crude bombs exploded," he added..
Northern Hostel Superintendent Obaidul Karim and Southern Hostel Superintendent Anwar Hossain are trying to bring the situation under control, he added.
When contacted, BCL Central committee President Al Nahian Khan Joy said they have heard about the incident.
"They (BCL) activists were instructed to remain calm. Strict organisational action will be taken after investigating the matter. There is no place for criminals in Chhatra League," he said.
