A faction of Bangladesh Chhatra League today allegedly ransacked the office of Chittagong University Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Shireen Akhter for not recruiting a former BCL leader as a teacher.

The unruly BCL men vandalised chairs, tables, crockery items and several flower tubs in front of the VC's room around 4:00pm, creating a panic among the office staffers.

As part of their agitation, they also halted shuttle train services between CU and the port city, causing immense suffering to students, reports our Chattogram staff correspondent.

Till filing this report around 8:00pm, the BCL men were staging demonstration near the campus by blocking the shuttle train services.

BCL insiders and campus sources said a faction led by CU BCL Vice President Moynul Hasan carried out the vandalism.

Campus sources said former BCL leader Raihan Ahmed applied as a teacher of the marine science department. But the administration appointed another candidate after a syndicate meeting.

Moynul Hasan claimed that Raihan got a gold medal for his excellent academic result but still the CU authority did not appoint him. On the contrary, CU authorities have appointed several candidates who are involved in anti-government campaigns.

"We have started a protest against the appointment of an anti-government candidate as a teacher. We will continue the agitation until the appointment of anti-government activists are cancelled," he added.

Despite several attempts, the correspondent could not reach VC Shireen Akhter for comment.

Sohidul Islam, assistant proctor of the university, told The Daily Star that the shuttle train service remains suspended as the train key was seized. "We are trying to resume the train service."
