JUST grants admission to Nipun, finally
Nipun Biswas, a student who could not get admitted to Jashore University of Science and Technology (JUST) after having failed to reach the university campus on time on January 30, will be granted admission on humanitarian grounds.
JUST Deans' Committee came up with the decision today at an emergency meeting following an order of the university's Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Md Anwar Hossain to this end, reports our Benapole correspondent.
Nipur, hailing from an impoverished family in Nilphamari, stood 17th in the merit list for admission in Physical Education and Sports Science Department of the university.
The department issued a notice for admission some time in the afternoon on January 30. As per the notice, the deadline for the completion of admission process was set at 10am of January 31.
However, Nipun, who was in Nilphamari at the time, came to know about this around 11:30pm on January 30, since he did not have access to mobile internet. Also, he did not get any calls or text messages from the university in this regard.
With financial help from relatives and neighbours, he somehow reserved a transport for Jashore but failed to reach the campus on time, and was denied admission. Another student, who stood 19th in the merit list, got admitted in his place.
Nipun arrived at the campus on 1:30pm on January 31 and later informed the VC about his ordeal. VC Prof Anwar, considering the humanitarian perspective of the situation, increased the number of seats for admission by one more as per the authority vested unto him, and requested the Deans' Committee to grant admission to Nipun.
Meanwhile, Nipun remained on the campus, hoping for a streak of light at the end of the tunnel.
"The admissions committee had completed the procedure following all the rules. After knowing that Nipun hails from a poor family, I called the emergency meeting of the Deans' Committee and we decided to admit him on humanitarian grounds. He will be allowed to get admitted tomorrow. JUST administration is always sympathetic to the students," VC Anwar told The Daily Star.
